COWGIRL Empowered: Kim Ratcliff

Manager, Caney Creek Ranch; Owner, Ratcliff Premium Meats

When Kim Ratcliff’s parents started Caney Creek Ranch, she was still fully immersed in her career at Bloomberg Financial in marketing and public relations in New York City.  After hearing about the different challenges that come with transitioning to a larger ranching operation, she decided home was where she needed to be.

Shortly after, she quit her job and enrolled in the Ranch Management program at Texas Christian University.  “I was the first African American ever to go through that program.  I think being the first has really allowed a lot of these opportunities to open up for me.  My platform is not necessarily the first, but it’s the diversity of our industry; so I’ve used my PR and marketing background to really help give a voice that’s never had a voice.”

Her meat company, Ratcliff Premium Meats, is a community-driven operation that aims to tell a story through its meat.  “I think community building is the number one thing to bring people to agriculture.  I’m getting asked to come to different association speaking engagements because there’s no one who looks like me who is doing what I do in the meat industry.  And it all started with me saying I needed to come home.  I didn’t know what that journey looked like, but I came home and found a community that supported me, and I used their support to be successful.”

Through her advocacy and entrepreneurship, Kim has been able to share her story on a larger platform, including a docuseries sponsored by the Beef Checkoff and marketed by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.  “It talks about my community again because that’s my biggest push in life.  It also talks about my family and how I’ve been a huge inspiration for my family coming back to the ranch.  I hope a hundred years from now I can be an angel to fly over this place.  Helping it get to that point, that’s ultimately the goal.”
