Research has proven that some are much more likely to experience this condition than others though. Horse owners should be aware of these factors! Laminitis is crippling, and sometimes even fatal. You should definitely take it seriously!

Common Risk Factors for Laminitis

  • Your horse has fat pads on their neck, crest, shoulders, and tail head.
  • They are classified as overweight or obese. A body condition score of 7 or higher increases their chances.
  • They are known as being an easy keeper.
  • The horse has trouble losing weight while on a diet.
  • Certain breeds and types like ponies, miniatures, Morgans, and Spanish mustangs are at a greater risk.
  • Mares with an abnormal estrous cycle.
  • Horses and ponies with an underlying hormonal problem.
  • Those with Equine Metabolic Syndrome or Cushing’s disease.
  • Horses exposed to lush pasture.
  • Spring and fall also present the most laminitis cases.
