A summer thunderstorm is quite common! It can be difficult to know what to do with your horse during these storms. Rain, lightning, and strong winds usually accompany them. The last thing you want is an accident to happen. That's why it's important to be prepared ahead of time and have a game plan!

Thunderstorms & Horses

  1. Check the forecast and radar ahead of time. You should know what's coming your way. Some thunderstorms are mild and quick, while others have hail, gusty winds, and lightning.
  2. Certain weather apps will alert you with special weather warnings and flooding advisories. These come in handy when unexpected storms pop up quickly!
  3. Your safety comes first. Try to plan ahead of time before the storm comes, so you're not out in the middle of it.
  4. Know your horse! If you have one of those that gets anxious and gallops around wildly during stormy weather, then bring them inside. On the other hand, some get more nervous confided in a stall. If the storm is mild, these horses may do better left outside.
  5. For lightning storms and those with heavy winds, it's usually better to bring them into a well-grounded stable. Most horses will shelter under trees, which can become hazardous in storms.
  6. Horses left outside should have a companion, as they will usually group together to weather the storm.
  7. If you're stuck outside with your horse, head for low ground. Avoid singular trees on hills, as they have the greatest risk of being struck by lightning.
  8. Make sure your horse's fencing and stall is secure. They need to be in a safe space, especially if they were to panic. Loose siding or roofing can bang and further frighten them!
  9. Always keep your barnyard tidy. Buckets and tools can easily be picked up in the wind.
  10. Don't ride your horse for at least 30 minutes after a storm. Stray lightning and thunder could surprise you and your horse.
