Riding a horse that is lazy and lacks energy is no fun! They're also usually pushy and have no problem coming in your space. These horses lack respect. They don't take you or your aids seriously. The best way to fix this problem is to motivate them. You need to get them in gear and listening.

Motivating the Lazy Horse

Ken McNabb Horsemanship shared a video on his YouTube channel that highlighted this exact issue. The goal is to reward the horse for forward energy and a positive attitude. He begins on the ground by kissing to the horse. If the horse doesn't move forward, they get a "spank" from the whip. He equates this to a horse biting another horse's butt to get them to move.

Eventually, you can transition to the saddle. The horse's attitude under saddle is very important. Most lazy ones are grouchy or in a bad mood. Ken addresses this by allowing the horse to slow down when they have forward ears and move off his aids.

Make sure to match the energy you're trying to accomplish. You must also be consistent with these horses and offer plenty of rewards/releases.
