It's that time of year! The flies and ticks are unreal. Without protection, they'll swarm your horse and bite them all day. These blood-thirsty insects are a real bother! You can buy fly sprays at your tack store, though they can get expensive, or you can make your own. This particular DIY option is natural and easy to make.

DIY Fly Spray

This recipe will make an entire 5-gallon bucket worth of spray. It costs roughly $2.00 a bottle. That's one heck of a deal! Yesterday Farm shares this simple yet effective tutorial. And yes, you can use it on yourself and other pets.

Ingredients:

  • 32 oz Aloe Juice (100% Aloe Juice Drink)
  • 16 oz White Vinegar
  • 16 oz Neem Oil
  • 4 oz Eucalyptus Oil
  • 4 oz Citronella
  • 4 oz Dish-Washing Liquid
  • 8 oz Mineral Oil
  • Clean Water

This will make up 5 gallons. You can find a bucket and lid at your local Home Depot or Lowes. There are some alternatives like lemon oil or lavender oil in place of the neem oil.

Follow this helpful tutorial to see how it's made.

This larger amount will hopefully last you a long time, depending on how many horses you have.
