Most horses fit in the hot- or cold-blooded category. Hot-blooded horses can be described as sensitive, reactive, and intelligent. They can make wonderful riding horses because they're forward and quick learners, but there's definitely a learning curve when working with them. Unfortunately, these horses can be spooky and nervous too.

Training Tips For Hot-Blooded Horses

  1. Do lots of desensitizing.
  2. Be subtle and light with your aids, but don't be afraid to use them either.
  3. Make sure you're releasing pressure quickly when the desired response is given.
  4. You need to be aware of your horse's body language and what they're telling you.
  5. Make sure to stay calm and level throughout your training sessions. They will feel your frustration or anxiety.
  6. Give these horses a chance to burn off excess energy with plenty of turnout.
  7. These horses need consistency and regular work. They may learn quickly, but it's often forgotten if not practiced regularly.
  8. Find a job they enjoy. Once you find the discipline they like, hot-blooded horses will usually excel quickly.
  9. Spend a lot time on the ground. There are so many exercises you can do before you even climb abroad. It'll make your saddle time much easier!
  10. Focus on keeping a steady rhythm and tempo when in the saddle.
