Positive reinforcement is a type of training. It has been known to have many benefits when used with horses. In simple terms, when the horse gives the desired response they receive a reward. A reward is usually a treat, though scratches can be used in some cases. Many trainers that turn to positive reinforcement or R+ will incorporate a clicker tool into their sessions. These are known as a bridge signal.

If you're looking for a more willing horse that is eager to please, then consider this type of training. It works wonders for many!

Benefits of Positive Reinforcement

  1. The trainer and horse develop a relationship that is build on trust and positive feelings. The horse isn't forced or frightened into performing, rather they choose to work with the trainer.
  2. Many horses get excited and motivated to work. They'll come to you in the field, meet you at the front of their stall, and leave the herd to spend time with you.
  3. It's fun for the trainer. You can teach your horse to perform at liberty and do tricks!
  4. It builds confidence in both the handler and horse. The environment is safe and rewarding, which is a great feeling all-round.
  5. There's an established community of supporters. You can find many experienced trainers and horse owners that would love to help guide you into R+ training.
