In the beginning, most riders are taught the basics of horse handling. This usually includes how to properly walk around their horse. It's important you remember that any horse can spook and kick out. No matter what your level of experience, you should ALWAYS handle your horse in a safe and careful matter.

The Basics of Walking Around Your Horse

If you're not familiar with the YouTube channel, Steady Horse, then check it out. His videos are filled with valuable content for all levels of riders and handlers. In this particular video, he teaches a beginner some safety tips.

When interacting with a horse whether for grooming, tacking up, or just general handling, consider the following...

  • Approach the horse at their shoulder.
  • Take a deep breathe and make sure the horse is relaxed with you.
  • As you walk around, keep a hand on the horse's body and stay close to them.
  • Stay close to their hindquarters, almost hugging them. This way the horse can't kick you with a fully extended hind leg.
  • A 2nd way to walk around you horse is to go way around them, out of the kicking zone.

Remember, safety first! You don't want to take any unnecessary risks.
