The spin or turnaround is a helpful maneuver to teach your horse. It allows you to work on steering and shoulder control. In many ranch and reining classes, this maneuver will be expected to some degree. It might seem like an easy skill to master, but you don't want to rush it. It's important to teach it in steps and create a solid foundation first!

Teaching the Spin

Zacharias Horsemanship on YouTube helps riders teach their horse the beginning steps to this spin maneuver. He's working with a 3-year-old Quarter Horse.

It starts will creating forward momentum and asking for the inside leg to step over. When beginning, he encourages riders to focus on one side for at least 5-10 mins before moving onto the other leg. Take note- he asks his horse for one step and then walks out. Forward energy is essential!

Once you master these steps, then you're ready to move onto asking for more. In part 2, you begin creating a smaller circle. Your horse will need to offer two to three crossovers. You can find the video tutorial on YouTube- Teaching the Spin 'Part 2'. Rhythm and consistency will be important as they advance.
