Most riders would agree that this sport requires a high level of fitness. This is especially true for those that take care of their horses on a daily basis- stalling cleaning, emptying and refilling water buckets, moving hay bales, etc... Riding in itself is also very physically demanding. You must have incredible stamina, strength, balance, and coordination.

By making a few simple changes to your lifestyle, you can increase your fitness and become the best rider you can be!

Fitness Tips

  1. Consider the food you eat on a daily basis. Do you have a well-balanced diet? Lean protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates will give you lots of energy for your barn chores. Try to cut back on processed foods.
  2. Cardio training should be done roughly 3 times a week. You can engage in a walk or jog around the farm or use a stationary bike, for example.
  3. Strength training is another area that you should work on. You can further develop your core riding muscles by doing exercises like plank and squats.
  4. Don't forget to stretch on a regular basis. You can increase your flexibility, which will reduce your risk of injury while riding.
  5. Use items you have around the barn to exercise. You can do toe taps on a square bale of hay or carry filled water buckets up and down the aisle.
  6. When setting goals, be realistic. It can be helpful to set smaller, short-term ones. Goals should be specific and measurable.
  7. Take your body measurements before you begin. You may be surprised to see how much weight you lose or muscle you gain. Charting your accomplishments will feel good!
  8. Give yourself at least 1 day off a week. Everyone needs a break!
  9. Try to find an accountability partner or an online support group.
  10. Have fun and experiment with other sports. Give ballroom dancing, swimming, or Tai Chi a try. Your horse will understand!
