The first few months and years of a horse's life are so important. It can set them up for a successful future! There are many different ways to raise a foal. Everyone seems to have their own opinion about it. There are three factors that most would agree on though!

Raising Foals

  1. Proper Nutrition: For a successful start, make sure the mother is on a balanced diet. This will ensure proper development and a good supply of milk. After weaning, the foal should be kept on free-choice hay or pasture. A hay sample can be analyzed to determine what vitamins and minerals are lacking. A ration balancer can be given to meet any deficiencies. It's extremely important you do not overfeed your youngster. This can lead to OCD and other joint issues.
  2. Turnout Time: Your foal should be turned out as much as possible! Limited movement will prevent their joints, tendons, and hooves from strengthening naturally.
  3. Groundwork: Teach your youngster to respect your boundaries. A foal may be cute, but nipping, kicking, and rearing can turn ugly once they get some size to them. Keep your sessions short and simple. Your foal is like a sponge and will absorb everything!
