A native Irish breed, the Connemara pony originated in the region of County Galway along the west coast of Ireland. There are breeders all over the world though, including North America, Europe, Australia, and South Africa. These ponies are known for their ground-covering movement, versatility, and good temperaments. It's no mystery why they're beloved by many!

Traits of the Connemara Pony

  1. These ponies are compact and have well-balanced bodies. They're generally 128cm to 148cm (12.2 to 14.2 hands) tall. They have strong hindquarters, back, and loins. The Connemara's head is of a pony type with wide set eyes that are large and kind.
  2. They come in many colors from gray, black, and bay to chestnut, palomino, and dun. Pinto coloring is not acceptable though.
  3. The Connemara Pony Breeder's Society awards different grades, based on how well the pony represents the breed on inspection day. A grade 1 is available for those that meet all the breed standards. Grade 2 and 3 are for those that don't meet the specifications.
  4. These versatile ponies do well in showing jumping, dressage, and eventing. They also have the stamina for endurance riding. Some teach them to drive. Connemara pony shows are held all over the world to highlight their athletic abilities.
  5. Most handlers would say these ponies have huge hearts. They bond deeply with their rider. They're known for their gentle depositions and incredible kindness.
