Horses are herd animals. They need companionship to be happy. While ideally their friend is another horse, that isn't always possible. In some cases, a smaller companion like a goat or sheep may have to suffice. There may not be enough space for two horses or it may be cost prohibitive. Fortunately, many horses get along with goats just fine! In fact, there have been famous racehorses that have had goat companions.

Goats & Horses

Ultimately, it will depend on the goat and horse if the two can get along. Consider the following...

  • Some goats will want nothing to do with horses and may even be frightened by them.
  • Your horse may be too aggressive. Goats are much smaller!
  • Goats are escape artists. Your fencing will need to be very secure. I recommend no-climb horse fencing.
  • You'll need to provide a hay feeder that is low enough for the goat to get to.
  • Some goats have horns. You might consider one that is polled or disbudded at birth.
  • It has been said by many that goats enjoy eating horse tails.
  • Your goat may try eating your horse's grain, so separation at feed time is necessary.
  • Goats are happy to eat weeds, bark, and leaves. They're less interested in grass. That can be beneficial if you have a field with brush.

It can be helpful to get two goats for your horse. They tend to be happier in pairs. Introductions should be slow and gradual. Keep them across the fence for a while and only introduce them when you're confident your horse won't attack. Goats are often much cheaper and easier to care for than a second horse. Not only do they make great companions, but they're hilarious to watch.
