Riding isn't the only way to provide your horse with daily exercise. There are plenty of simple ways to keep them in tip-top shape without climbing into the saddle. For some horses, they can't be ridden due to their size, their age, or an injury. Other times, you may be too busy and don't have the time to tack up. Don't worry- there's still plenty you can do!

Exercising Your Horse

In order to keep your horse healthy and fit, you'll need to provide them with regular exercise. For those horses that can't be ridden or if you're short on time, try some of these ideas instead.

  • Daily turnout- track systems are especially helpful for encouraging movement
  • Lunging
  • Long-lining
  • Hand walking (around the arena, barn property, or even on the trails)
  • Liberty training
  • Groundwork exercises like yielding hindquarters and turning on the forehand
  • Driving/pulling a cart
  • Use a horse walker or treadmill
  • Swim with them
  • Stretches
  • Ponying

It can actually be a lot of fun to connect with your horse on the ground. It can also be helpful to change things up. Most horses get bored with the same work day after day. Don't be afraid to try something new!
