Many equestrians choose to lunge their horse for a variety of reasons. It can be a great way to train and condition them. It consists of the horse traveling in a circle around their handler. Some will start lunging early in the horse's training before they're ridden. This type of exercise does require that the handler has some experience though.

How to Lunge a Horse

In the beginning, you should start with a horse that has been lunged previously. They should know basic commands and have a general idea on how to travel around you. This will make learning so much easier for you.

There are some pieces of tack that are necessary for lunging. These include a lunge line, bridle with bit or cavesson, whip, and gloves. You can lunge a horse in a halter, but it's usually much more difficult to control them.

Keep in mind, lunging is not to get out the bucks. It can be quite dangerous to let your horse gallop wildly around you. They may injury themselves or you.

The Utah State University Extension created a helpful video tutorial for beginners. They go over the process and how to get started.

With practice and a patient horse, you'll learn the techniques of this form of exercise in no time! It can be helpful to have an experienced eye watch over your first few sessions.

You'll find there are many benefits!
