Ranch work is tough- on the person and the horse. There are long hours, harsh weather conditions, and lots of maneuvering. It an be difficult to find or make a horse that can stand up to the test. Bloodlines can be influential, but ultimately it's the individual horse that needs to be judged. Some of the greatest ranch horses are grade and average looking at best.

The Ranch Horse

Stonefield Ranch offers a short film on what it takes to make a ranch horse. They share their journey and stories from the American West. Their content is beautifully captured and true to cowboy life.

In this video, enjoy the making of a three-year-old horse. They spend some time in the arena getting him ready for what he might encounter on the ranch. This cowboy is shaping his horse's skills as if he were an artist and this is his masterpiece.

He comments, "the arena is a gym for horses." Every horse needs training and miles. The potential is there, but the rider has to bring it out.

You don't need an expensive $10,000 yearling. Sometimes, it's the grade or "ugly" ones that end up impressing you the most.
